Wipro Introduces Compulsory Hybrid Work Policy Requiring Employees to Attend Office for a Minimum of Three Days Weekly; Non-compliance to Incur Consequences, States the Company

Wipro, a prominent software services company in India, has implemented a compulsory hybrid work policy, necessitating employees to be physically present in the office for a minimum of three days per week. The company officially communicated this new rule via email, stating that it would take effect from November 15, 2023. This decision aligns with a broader trend observed among major Indian IT firms, such as TCS and Infosys, which have also shifted to office-based work models. While the primary goal is to enhance teamwork and encourage in-person interactions, the policy allows for flexibility to accommodate regional variations, local laws, and agreements.

The company-wide email, dated November 6, 2023, and reviewed by Money Control, outlined the rationale behind the shift to a hybrid work model. Wipro’s Chief Human Resources Officer, Saurabh Govil, explained that the change is aimed at promoting face-to-face collaboration, reinforcing the corporate culture, and facilitating more effective communication.

According to the email, starting November 15, all employees are mandated to be present at their designated office location for a minimum of three days each week.

Emphasizing the positive impact of the new work policy, Wipro stated that it aims to expedite issue resolution, foster stronger team dynamics, and encourage increased collaboration among colleagues. The company also indicated that it would adapt certain rules for different countries based on local regulations, particularly engaging in discussions with employees’ groups in specific European countries.

Wipro notified its employees that non-compliance with the new work policy would result in consequences starting from January 7, 2024. The company stressed the importance of accountability for its success, warning that failure to adhere to the rules could lead to a loss of trust, decreased work quality, and heightened stress or conflicts. Wipro may take corrective action if employees do not comply.

This shift in policy by Wipro reflects an adjustment to the evolving nature of work post-pandemic, aiming to balance the benefits of in-office collaboration for three days a week with the recognition of diverse employee needs. Similar changes are being observed in many other IT companies as they respond to the preferences and requirements of their workforce.
