Reliance Jio Debuts JioSpaceFiber, a Satellite-Based Internet Service, Bringing High-Speed Broadband to Previously Underserved Areas in India

Reliance Jio has introduced a groundbreaking satellite-based internet service in India called JioSpaceFiber. This innovative service aims to provide high-speed broadband to areas of India that have previously had limited or no internet access. The official launch of JioSpaceFiber took place at the India Mobile Congress, and it is poised to revolutionize India’s digital landscape.

Reliance Jio already serves over 450 million customers with fast broadband and wireless internet. In pursuit of their mission to make digital services accessible to every Indian household, Jio has added JioSpaceFiber to its portfolio of broadband offerings, which includes JioFiber and JioAirFiber. This expansion ensures that consumers and businesses across India can enjoy reliable, low-latency, and high-speed internet connectivity, regardless of their location. The satellite network will also boost mobile backhaul capacity, thereby enhancing the availability and reach of Jio’s True5G network, even in the most remote areas of the country.

A standout feature of this initiative is the partnership between Jio and SES, a leading satellite operator. SES provides Jio with access to cutting-edge medium earth orbit (MEO) satellite technology. Through SES’s O3b and new O3b mPOWER satellites, Jio becomes the exclusive provider of this groundbreaking technology, offering scalable and affordable broadband solutions throughout India. What sets this service apart is its unparalleled reliability and service flexibility, making it a pioneering achievement in the industry.

To illustrate the reach of JioSpaceFiber, four of India’s remotest locations have already been connected, including Gir in Gujarat, Korba in Chhattisgarh, Nabarangpur in Odisha, and ONGC-Jorhat in Assam. This achievement underscores the service’s capability to bridge the digital divide in underserved regions and deliver high-speed broadband where it is needed the most.

Akash Ambani, the Chairman of Reliance Jio Infocomm Limited, shared his vision for JioSpaceFiber, emphasizing its potential to enable millions of homes and businesses to access broadband for the first time. This new offering represents a significant step toward ensuring that everyone, regardless of their location, can fully participate in the digital society, with gigabit-speed access to essential online services such as government, education, health, and entertainment.

John-Paul Hemingway, Chief Strategy Officer at SES, lauded the collaboration with Jio and underscored the role of the service in supporting India’s Digital India initiative. He emphasized that this unique solution aims to deliver multiple gigabits per second of internet throughput to any location in India. The deployment of fiber-like services from space is already transforming parts of India, holding the promise of digital transformation even in the most remote rural areas.
