In a significant development for medical education in Assam, the National Medical Commission (NMC) has given recognition to two prominent medical colleges, Assam Medical College and Guwahati Medical College, for another five years.

Assam Secures Additional 326 MBBS Seats

This decision comes after a rigorous assessment of the colleges based on various parameters, including faculty verification and attendance tracking. As a result, Assam is set to witness a significant increase of 326 MBBS seats, with Assam Medical College receiving 170 seats and Guwahati Medical College receiving 156 seats.

Assam Medical College’s Recognition and Efforts to Address Discrepancies:

Following a thorough physical verification and assessment, the NMC granted continuation of recognition to Assam Medical College and Hospital (AMCH) for five years. The commission also highlighted the need for the college to address specific concerns, such as vacancies in the ENT department. In response, the college made dedicated efforts to rectify the discrepancies raised by the commission, resulting in the successful continuation of recognition. This accomplishment will provide a boost to medical education in Assam, allowing aspiring doctors to pursue their MBBS degrees.

Guwahati Medical College’s Recognition and Attendance Tracking:

Guwahati Medical College and Hospital faced scrutiny over faculty attendance tracking, particularly the use of aadhar-based biometric systems. The NMC raised concerns regarding the marking of attendance for faculty members. However, the college principal clarified that a significant majority of registered users had successfully marked their attendance using the Aadhaar Enabled Biometric Attendance System (AEBAS). In light of this explanation and considering other important factors, the commission granted recognition to Guwahati Medical College.

The Impact on NEET UG Counselling 2023

The recognition of Assam Medical College and Guwahati Medical College by the NMC holds significant implications for NEET UG Counselling 2023. With the addition of 326 new MBBS seats in Assam, aspiring medical students will have increased opportunities to secure admission and pursue their dreams of becoming doctors.
