WhatsApp introduces the Secret Code feature for chats, marking a significant privacy update. Previously, users could add a lock to their private chats, but a potential security loophole existed. The platform allowed individuals to use the same fingerprint password for unlocking both their phone and WhatsApp private chats. This meant that if someone registered their fingerprint on the user’s phone, they could access WhatsApp chats.
With the latest update, WhatsApp enhances security by implementing the new Secret Code feature for all users. Now, users can create a unique password using words or emojis to secure their chats with a passcode known only to them. Additionally, users can configure settings to access locked chats by typing the secret code in the search bar, as revealed by a company executive.
Meta CEO announced, “Rolling out secret code to Chat Lock on WhatsApp so you can protect your chats with a unique password. Now you can set your locked chats to only appear when you type the secret code in the search bar, so no one can unintentionally discover your most private conversations.”
To quickly lock chats, users can long-press a chat without entering individual chat settings.
To access the new Secret Code feature and ensure chat privacy on WhatsApp:
- Open the list of locked chats.
- Tap the three dots at the top.
- Go to Chat Lock settings.
- Turn on “Hide locked chats.”
- Set a memorable secret code.
After this setup, locked chats won’t appear in the main chat window, offering enhanced privacy compared to the previous design. If users wish to view locked chats, they can enter the secret code in the search bar. It’s important to note that this visibility is temporary and lasts only until exiting the app, ensuring a secure and private chat experience.
As for the availability of the WhatsApp Secret Code feature, the rollout has commenced but may take some time to reach all users. Users are advised to wait for a few days for the feature to become accessible on their phones.
