Advanced Micro Devices (AMD), the US-based chipmaker, has committed to investing $400 million in India over the next five years. Mark Paper master, the Executive Vice President and Chief Technology Officer of AMD, revealed the investment plans during the second edition of SemiconIndia 2023 in Gandhinagar. The event was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. AMD’s investment in India will encompass the establishment of a new campus in Bengaluru, Karnataka, which will serve as the company’s largest design center. Additionally, AMD plans to create approximately 3,000 new engineering roles by the end of 2028.

Having initiated its operations in India back in 2001 with its first site in New Delhi, AMD now employs over 6,500 professionals in the country. The new Bengaluru campus, spanning 500,000 square feet, will bring the total number of AMD offices to 10 across cities like Bangalore, Delhi, Gurgaon, Hyderabad, and Mumbai. The new campus is expected to be operational before the end of 2023 and will feature advanced lab facilities, state-of-the-art collaboration tools, and seating arrangements designed to foster teamwork. The investment is supported by various policy initiatives of the Indian Government that focus on the semiconductor industry. Mark Paper master expressed his confidence in India’s skilled talent pool and local leadership that have laid a strong foundation for AMD’s growth since 2001. He emphasized AMD’s commitment to driving innovation in India and supporting the India Semiconductor Mission through the expansion in Bengaluru.

AMD boasts a diverse product portfolio, driven by growth in artificial intelligence, networking, and 6G communications. The India teams play a pivotal role in delivering high-performance and adaptive solutions to AMD customers worldwide. The decision to establish its largest R&D design center in India and expand the India-AMD partnership has received positive responses from both the Ministry of Electronics & IT ministers – Ashwini Vaishnaw and Rajeev Chandrasekhar. The new center will create significant opportunities for India’s extensive pool of highly skilled semiconductor engineers and researchers.
