Telangana Faces Unprecedented Rainfall, Hyderabad Grapples with Severe Flooding

Telangana witnessed a record-breaking rainfall of 464 mm within a span of six hours in Vailpur, Nizamabad district. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) in Hyderabad issued a red alert warning for several districts in the state due to the expectation of extremely heavy rainfall over the next three days. State roads and buildings minister Vemula Prashant Reddy, along with district collector Rajiv Gandhi Hanumanthu, visited the rain-affected areas of Vailpur and expressed that such intense rainfall was unprecedented in the history of Telangana. The IMD identified five red zones for extremely heavy rainfall, with five of them located in Nizamabad district alone – Perkit, Vailpur, Bhimgal, Konasamandar, and Jakranpalli. Other areas in the state, such as Kapula Kanaparthy in Warangal, Kunur in Jangaon district, and Sangem in Warangal, also experienced substantial rainfall.

IMD Hyderabad director Nagarathna issued an orange alert for several districts, including Mahabubabad, Warangal, Hanumakonda, Khammam, Nalgonda, Suryapet, Rangareddy, Vikarabad, Sangareddy, Medak, and Kamareddy, as they were expected to receive heavy to very heavy rainfall in the following three days.

Due to the heavy downpour, many residential areas in Saidabad, Singareni Officers colony, Kodandaram Nagar, and some colonies in Saroornagar, Gajularamaram, and Malkampet were inundated, causing severe hardships to residents. The situation led to traffic snarls in various areas, particularly in the Information Technology corridors of Madhapur, Gachibowli, Raidurgam, and surrounding regions. Additionally, there was a tragic incident at Abids where a person lost his life after asbestos sheets fell on him while he sought shelter near a wall. The disaster response teams from Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) and the police worked tirelessly to clear fallen trees and water stagnation points throughout the night.
