NMC mandates online counselling for PG medical admissions

The National Medical Commission (NMC) has introduced new regulations governing post-graduate medical admissions. These regulations underscore the exclusive use of online counseling for admissions, with a strong emphasis on common counseling based on the merit lists derived from respective exams.

The recently announced “Post-Graduate Medical Education Regulations, 2023” mandate that all stages of counseling for post-graduate seats in medical institutions across India will be conducted solely through online modes, overseen by state or central counseling authorities.

In strict adherence to these regulations, medical colleges must disclose the fees for each course before the commencement of the counseling process. The NMC explicitly asserts that no medical college or institution has the authority to independently admit candidates. The regulations state, “All rounds of counseling for all seats will be held in online mode by state or central counseling authority, and no medical college/institution will admit any candidate themselves.”

Furthermore, the regulations specify that while entering details in the seat matrix, medical colleges must indicate the fees for each course; otherwise, the seat will not be counted. These guidelines aim to ensure transparency and fairness in the admission process.

Dr. Vijay Oza, President of the Post-Graduate Medical Education Board of the NMC, highlighted key changes in the regulatory landscape, particularly focusing on modifications in the examination system. These changes include the introduction of formative assessments and the incorporation of multiple-choice questions as an option in university examinations. The strategic shift aims to streamline the evaluation process and introduce enhanced examination methodologies in the realm of post-graduate medical education.
