Initiative Launched by Odisha Government to Enhance Cognitive Development in Children

Odisha Government Launches Program to Foster Brain Development in Children’s First 1000 Days

On Children’s Day, the Odisha government unveiled the ”Ama Kunipila” (Our Kids) program, an initiative by the Women and Child Development (WCD) department aimed at supporting the brain development of children during their first 1000 days of life. Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik emphasized the importance of providing children with the right education, healthcare, and environment during infancy to foster their potential as future citizens. Recognizing the critical impact of the initial 1000 days on a child’s growth and development, the program focuses on institutionalizing home-based care through parent-led stimulation initiatives.

”Ama Kunipila” encompasses various components, including raising awareness among parents and caregivers about the significance of the early years, engaging children with low-cost toys crafted by parents, and incorporating storytelling. The initiative also involves the development of Information and Education Campaign (IEC) materials, such as kids’ calendars, booklets, and toy kits, to support and enhance the activities under the ”Ama Kunipila” program.
