Positive mental health is a vital aspect of overall well-being and plays a pivotal role in the comprehensive development of children. Unfortunately, there is substantial and enduring evidence indicating a significant issue with the mental health of children and adolescents in India.

This challenge is compounded by the lack of specialized support services, a challenging economic landscape, mounting social concerns within communities, the influence of technology, particularly social media, the proliferation of cyberbullying, and a more stressful educational environment in schools due to curriculum adjustments and high-stakes assessments.

Addressing the Immediate Requirement for Comprehensive Mental Health Support in Indian Educational Institutions

A survey by the National Sample Poll Organisation in India revealed that 10 percent of school-age children experience mental health challenges, with test stress being a prominent factor. The existing evaluation system places substantial emphasis on academic achievement, subjecting children to heightened stress and anxiety levels.

On a global scale, it’s estimated that 13 percent of individuals under the age of 18 grapple with significant mental health issues. Consequently, there is a growing need for schools to address this concern.

Innovative Approaches to Elevate Student Well-Being

School administrators are beginning to explore innovative approaches to support student well-being. Throughout the country, institutions are adopting strategies such as telehealth, peer counseling, and group therapy. They are also reevaluating crisis management protocols, providing faculty and staff with improved training to recognize and assist students in distress and identify potential crises. Furthermore, many schools are working to integrate a broader culture of wellness into their policies, frameworks, and everyday operations.

Psychologists are playing a pivotal role in helping schools, colleges, and universities cultivate a more comprehensive culture of well-being in response to a sharp increase in demand for support. They are also enhancing staff readiness to aid students in need.

It is an undeniable responsibility of the school to ensure the health, safety, and well-being of every student under its care. In India’s various states and union territories, schools are where school administrators, principals, teachers, support staff, and students collectively spend approximately one-third of a day for 200-220 days each year. However, the burden cannot solely rest on the shoulders of instructors or the school itself. Instead, it necessitates the active involvement of all stakeholders associated with the school, including leaders, educators, staff, and parents, to collaboratively create a safe and nurturing learning environment that promotes the mental and emotional well-being of students and provides timely support to those with special needs.
