WhatsApp Set to Introduce Email Verification to Enhance Account Security Against Hackers


WhatsApp Working on Email Verification for Enhanced Account Security: A New Optional Feature to Safeguard and Verify User Accounts

WhatsApp, the messaging platform owned by Meta, has consistently prioritized user privacy and data protection by enhancing its security measures. The app already utilizes end-to-end encryption for personal messages, ensuring the confidentiality of content between senders and receivers. Additionally, WhatsApp has recently introduced various features such as “silence unknown callers” and “chat lock” to bolster account security. Despite these improvements, the platform remains a target for hackers, leading WhatsApp’s development team to continually work on new features.

One such feature currently under development is the option for users to verify their accounts using an email address. According to reports from Wabetainfo, this email verification will be an optional feature. If enabled, WhatsApp will prompt users to provide their email address, offering an additional layer of protection and verification for their accounts.

While specific use cases for the email verification feature are yet to be detailed, it is expected to be useful in situations such as phone theft or loss of access to the linked phone number. When users find themselves unable to receive a verification code on a new device due to server or network issues, the email verification could also prove beneficial.

Importantly, this new email verification option will be distinct from the one used during the configuration of two-step verification. Users will have the flexibility to decide whether they want to use their email address for this account protection measure.

In other news, WhatsApp released its monthly report for June 2023, shedding light on the actions taken to address safety concerns on the platform. The report reveals that WhatsApp banned 6,611,700 accounts of Indian users during that month. While most of these accounts were banned following user reports, the platform also proactively banned 2,434,200 accounts before receiving any user complaints.

These monthly user safety reports are in accordance with the Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2021. They provide insights into WhatsApp’s responses to various factors, including user grievances in India, account actions taken due to violations of Indian laws or WhatsApp’s Terms of Service, and orders from the Grievance Appellate Committee (GAC).The email verification feature is currently in development and is expected to be included in future updates of the WhatsApp app.
