SemiconIndia 2023: Micron Technology’s Gujarat Plant to Generate 20,000 Jobs

Micron to build Gujarat plant

The Planned $2.75-Billion Assembly and Testing Plant Reflects Micron’s Confidence in India’s Semiconductor Ecosystem

Micron Technology, a leading US-memory chip manufacturer, has reaffirmed its intentions to construct a cutting-edge semiconductor assembly and test facility in Gujarat. The announcement was initially made during Prime Minister Modi’s recent visit to the United States, where he met with Sanjay Mehrotra, the President and CEO of Micron Technology, and other key figures in the semiconductor industry.

During the Semicon India 2023 event, Sanjay Mehrotra commended Prime Minister Modi for his visionary initiatives like Digital India and Make in India, which have garnered support for India’s semiconductor industry. Micron has displayed its commitment to the country by revealing that the Gujarat plant will not only generate nearly 5,000 direct job opportunities but also create an additional 15,000 jobs in the local community.

The proposed $2.75-billion assembly and testing plant were discussed in a meeting with Minister of Commerce and Industry, Piyush Goyal, ahead of Semicon India 2023. Sanjay Mehrotra detailed the company’s investment plans in India, acknowledging the nation’s semiconductor industry as an emerging global leader.

Construction of Micron’s state-of-the-art assembly and test facility is set to commence in 2023, with Phase 1 projected to become operational in late 2024. This initial phase will cover 500,000 square feet of planned clean room space, and Micron aims to gradually increase capacity in line with global demand trends. Phase 2, with a similar scale to Phase 1, is anticipated to begin towards the second half of the decade.

By establishing a manufacturing unit for both DRAM and NAND products in Gujarat, Micron aims to meet the growing demand from both domestic and international markets. Additionally, the company’s investment in the region is expected to catalyze further advancements in the semiconductor sector, fostering an environment of innovation and facilitating business growth.
